I've had this same issue, where all my Find My contacts could never see my Live location, since iOS 15 launched. And if my iPhone falls asleep it I need to restart it to get back to Live sometimes. Its quirky because even if your on the phone it can drop back. I went ahead and collected real world data, a buddy of mine left for work this morning so I texted him and asked if he would turn on his GPS. The only way to get 'Live' location is if the person using the iPhone has Find My in the foreground or another GPS navigation app that has a constant stream of GPS sensor data. This will be reported as 'Now' since its more of a snap shot. That means if Find My is in the background and you are not running an app that is constantly using GPS like a navigation app you will only get the location data that is cached (not GPS data). GPS is rarely used due to battery usage.įind My running in the background just collects iOS location service data and sends it too you. IOS spends the vast majority of its time using wifi, cellular and BT marked by a 'significant location' for location information. That is very high battery usage on their end.

You're not going to be able to turn Live on someone else's iPhone at a whim. Its a feature for you to help someone with navigation if they are all turned around or having trouble finding your driveway or something.

Maybe you guys didn't catch how it works? Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the confusion? The device you are 'tracking' needs to be using its GPS receiver while moving.
